Is Nuclear Energy a 'given' in the drive towards Zero Carbon?
Innovate UK is now part of the UK Research and Innovation government agency and a recent report by Energy Systems Catapult, one of a network of elite technology and innovation centres set up by Innovate UK, makes fascinating reading. A good ‘primer’ on the issues facing society as we journey through an Energy Transition towards a Zero Carbon (or Net Zero Emissions!) world. https://es.catapult.org.uk/reports/innovating-to-net-zero/ . Societal change is required….. not just technological evolution. Does Nuclear Power have to ‘be in the mix’ as part of the Energy Transition? For some countries apparently not… for the UK, yes, with two new power stations under construction. https://es.catapult.org.uk/reports/nuclear-for-net-zero/ . Looking globally the answer also seems to be yes with currently an estimated 55 new reactors under construction, predominantly in Asia. The International Energy Agency in its World Energy Outlook envisages global nuclear power generation capacity growth of over 15% by 2040 equivalent to an estimated 8.5% of global power generation….. with China having 34% of the total global nuclear power generating capacity.
