Should Countries Reassess their Electric Vehicle (EV) Targets?

Impressive progress has been made in #EnergyTransformation with global #renewable electricty (hydro, wind, solar PV, bio, geothermal, concentrated solar power and ocean power) capacity assessed at 33% and share of production at 26.2% at end of 2018 (source: REN21 Renewables 2019 Global Status Report). However, with transport estimated to consume 32% of the worlds total energy consumption the contribution of renewable electrictity is only 0.3%. Analysis of the global car sales market (source: IEA Global EV Outlook 2019) show market share for new #EV sales varies between 2.5% (Europe) and 4.5% (China) having risen from negligible in 2013 (apart from one or two small markets eg Norway). The trend line suggests it will be decades before EVs dominate the market. Countries that have set targets looking towards full electrification of transport between 2030 and 2050 should seriously consider whether those are realistic targets without massive government intervention and funding.
